Choosing Boating Accessories to be brought on Board

Before sailing out to sea, the captain should be sure the boat is in good condition by checking all the equipment and accessories on board. If there are any missing, they should be ordered immediately which will surely come in handy in case of an emergency.

Some vessels may not be as high tech as other yachts in the marina. This can all change by getting some of the things which are compact and able to cater to the same function.

One of these things is GPS or a global positioning system. Large units are usually installed in the bridge of the ship. Those who don’t have that much can order this from the internet or buy a hand held version for less than $500.

The nice thing about this portable device is that it can also be used on land since they are usually preprogrammed with maps of the United States. If the sailor wants to add more information, a memory chip or this information can be downloaded from the web.

Boats big or small should have a safe and proper area for people to get on board. You can buy a pontoon ladder if the old one isn’t as sturdy anymore. Some models can be screwed on while there are others that are detachable.

These are available in either three or four step which costs from $80 to $130. You should first measure the side of the boat where the entrance is to make sure it will fit well in the boat.

The boating enthusiast should never leave home without a durable VHF radio. This is the best way to monitor any changes in weather and because the radio frequencies are all monitored by the United States Coast Guard. If there are any problems, a call can be placed in and rescue can be dispatched within minutes.

You should check the length of the battery life, if it is waterproof, how fast it charges and if it comes with a warranty. There are many brands available and the price range for this equipment can be from $60 to $180 in the market.

Boating accessories are there not for aesthetic purposes but to be used when the captain is out in the ocean. The boating enthusiast might think it is better to buy cheap stuff than expensive versions but should remember that this could be the difference between life and death at sea.
