Boating in Michigan

Michigan is a state situated in the Midwest. Aside from the schools and other tourist attractions, visitors must never miss riding a boat on its waters.

People will be amazed by the 4 great lakes and 11,000 inland lakes and rivers to explore, 7,000 miles of canoeable streams and 13,000 miles of trout waters with different plants and animals to see.

Before going on a boat trip, Michigan law requires the boating enthusiast to know some basic rules. This includes the vessel length and capacities, refueling, float plans and charts, navigational rules, weather, emergencies and personal watercraft basics.

There are courses offered and upon passing the exam and obtaining the license, only then will you be allowed to sail in the waters of Michigan. The nice thing is that people as young as 12 can get a safety certificate which is something that can be done much earlier than driving on the road.

Boat owners and passengers on board the vessel are required to wear lifejackets during the entire journey. This is because the number one cause of deaths is accidental drowning. This makes the case stronger for children not to be left unattended since most of the fatalities are minors.

There are some schools and offices that offer these courses for free while there are others that will require the student to pay a fee. Online courses are not being accepted at the moment by those who don’t have time to attend theses classes.

People are also advised not to drink while sailing. This is because the owner may cause a serious accident and injure the people on board and those in another boat. Those who are caught sailing under the influence may pay a heavy fine, be jailed or have their license revoked.

The boat must be sea worthy before casting off. The local sheriff’s office can make an inspection and if there are no problems, the people can shove off and enjoy the beauty of what the state of Michigan has to offer. Law enforcement officers will know the vessel is safe since a sticker is placed on the windshield after this has been completed.

Some people are concerned about security in these parts but there is nothing to be afraid off since these are constantly patrolled by elements of the police and the coast guard.

Boating in Michigan or in any other state can be fun. Those who wish to set sail should just comply with the law to make sure everyone will enjoy the trip until it is time to go home.
