Boating Safety Tips when Boating: Why It is Better to Live by the Rules?
When somebody tells you it is easier to travel by boat than by land, you know he is either lying about it or doesn't know what boating is all about.
Like any transportation, a boat can also render some dangerous situations if the riders don't observe safety boating rules.
Today, boating seems to be one of the fastest growing recreational activities for most Americans. With over 70 million Americans enjoying this type of activity every year, it is worthy to take note that the fatal accidents involving boating have decreased. This is due to the enlarged number of “personal flotation devices” or life jackets.
However, in spite of the great news, it is still imperative to teach people about the different safety tips in boating to avoid further mishaps. Here is a list of some safety tips when boating:
1. Become skilled at swimming
There is no other way you can save yourself whenever accidents happen in a boat than to learn how to swim. Of course, how can you save yourself in the waters if you don't know how to swim.
You don't have to be an athlete or a swimming expert to survive in the water. Try to learn the simple and the most basic strokes in swimming and you'll be amazed at how this can greatly save your life or the life others.
As the saying goes, if you don't know how to swim, you have less of a chance for survival.
2. Always wear a life jacket
It doesn't necessarily mean that just because you know how to swim means you no longer need a life jacket. Statistics shows that more than 81% of the people who die in boating accidents are actually not wearing life jackets. Surprisingly, most of them know how to swim as well but still died in the accident.
3. Don’t drink when you drive
This old adage not only applies to driving by land. It is also applicable to boating because when a person gets intoxicated by alcohol, his senses, and coordination, and balance are automatically impaired. In actuality, these are very important in order to boat safely.
4. Never go against the weather
Always be on the lookout for a bad weather. If you think that the sky is so gray and the weather seems unwelcoming, it is better to stay at home than to run into danger.
Indeed, safety boating rules weren't made just for the sake of it. These are rules that you have to follow in order to live.
